The Gunners sit top of the table ahead of Sunday’s crucial showdown with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. A win would take them four points clear of the reigning champions and put them in prime position to lift the trophy come the end of the season.
A defeat would not be disastrous but would certainly put Arteta’s side on the bac kfoot. Ahead of the game, ex-Arsenal boss Wenger has given his thoughts on the showdown and the race for the title.
The Frenchman believes that the Gunners’ experience of slipping out of contention last term could give them the mental strength to stay in the battle this term. Asked by Freddie Ljunberg if Arsenal could go all the way, Wenger replied: “I think so, yes.
“The next game will be a little decider because we go to Man City. Why not? City is always a difficult team to play but maybe not as dominant as they were last year at the moment but that can always come. They know how to do it, they have the knowledge, they have been there.
“Arsenal has the capacity but they have to show they can do it now. I hope and I’m convinced they have learned from last year.
“Last year the tension got to them and they dropped in the final sprint. Maybe this year because they have two competitions to go for they might be a bit more relaxed.”

Arsenal topped the table at a very similar stage last term. After the 29th game of the season, they led the way but just three wins out of their final eight games of the campaign saw them slip away.
A particularly bruising result came at the hands of Man City. Pep Guardiola ’s side won 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium - Kevin de Bruyne scoring twice, with John Stones and Erling Haaland also finding the net. Rob Holding scored a late consolation for Arsenal.
While Man City and Arsenal will slug it out at the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool will wait for a slip from either of the two sides. The Reds are only behind the Gunners on goal difference and could claim top spot with a win this weekend.
