Arsenal benefiting from clever transfer clauses as Edu learns from past mistakes

In a recent interview with Estadao, Edu explained the rigorous process behind how the club looks at potential signings. “You can’t sign for the sake of signing,” Edu said.

“It has to be a process that takes weeks and weeks. On my desk, I have reports of over 180 pages on one player. It’s really detailed stuff.
“Physical, technical, mental profile, whether he has Premier League experience, whether he’ll be able to adapt. Everything.

“We analyse our deficiencies, where we can improve, where we can invest and then we go in search of that new name. We’ve been discussing what I’m going to do now since January. It’s not my decision or Mikel’s. It’s a group decision.”

However, despite all the praise for the incomings side of the moves, the Brazilian has instead faced plenty of flack from sections of the fan base regarding the club’s sales. Arsenal have allowed plenty of their former players to leave for low transfer fees and in some cases nothing at all – even settling with the individual players to terminate their contracts.

Thankfully, this has certainly diminished of late and Arsenal will be looking to make serious money on a number of players this summer. However, one thing which has potentially slid under the radar has been the work to bring in a steady income from prior departures which is bearing fruit now.

Fans for some time called for clauses to be inserted into player contracts in order to help gain additional money. We saw it last summer when Edu and the club managed to bring in more than £30million in the sale of Folarin Balogun and they agreed a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause with Monaco for any future sale.
