Arsenal must act now as report shares big £88m attacker twist - report

Arsenal must move quickly if they want to get a deal for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres over the line this summer.
The Gunners are on the market for a new centre forward, and the Swedish phenom is firmly on their radar, but Sporting are determined to keep him for at least one more season.

A Bola reports that the Portuguese champions are already plotting to offer Gyokeres a new contract to extend his stay at the Estadio Jose Alvalade beyond 2028.

Gyokeres still has four years left on the five-year deal he signed when he joined Sporting from Coventry City for around €20 million last summer.

However, his goalscoring exploits in the Primera Liga has sparked interest from a host of European clubs, especially in the Premier League, with Arsenal and Chelsea touted as potential landing spots.

Sporting have no interest in losing the striker after only a year and want to offer him a new deal that comes with a pay rise and could also increase his £88m release clause.

There is still a chance that Gyokeres ends up at the Emirates Stadium this summer, but Arsenal must activate his release clause before Sporting ties him to a new deal.

The 25-year-old was a crucial component in Ruben Amorim’s title-winning side, firing Sporting to the Primera Liga title with 29 goals in 33 league games.

The Sweden international also notched a remarkable 43 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, so it’s unsurprising that Arsenal are eager to land his signature this summer.

The Gunners are in dire need of a free-scoring centre-forward, with Gabriel Jesus and Edward Nketiah struggling to live up to expectations.

Kai Havertz has slotted into the centre-forward role admirably, returning his best-ever Premier League tally with 13 goals in 37 games, but Arsenal will need more than that to close the gap on Manchester City next term.
