Arsenal news: William Saliba claim dismissed as top target Alexander Isak holds talks

Arsenal are now nervously looking ahead to Tuesday's clash between Manchester City and Tottenham.
The Gunners know that a win or even a draw for Spurs will hand them the advantage over City in the title race. Mikel Arteta's side now occupy top spot in the Premier League after beating Manchester United on Sunday.

The title race will go down to the final day, though a win for City over Spurs would likely ensure they lift the trophy on Sunday. While there is still the chance to end a 20-year title drought, some attention is turning towards the summer transfer window.

Top targe Alexander Isak has held talks with Newcasle as the Gunners eye a move, while Arteta has been urged to make a push to sign Jadon Sancho. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Arsenal news.

Saliba claim dismissed
Rio Ferdinand has pushed back on claims that William Saliba has been the best defender in the Premier League this season. Saliba was named man of the match as the Gunners beat Manchester United, but Ferdinand has not been convinced by the Frenchman.

"I don't think Saliba's been the best Arsenal defender this season, to say he's the best in the league is a stretch I think, Van Dijk's been back to somewhere near his best by the way," he told the Vibe with Five podcast.

"I think Saliba is better on the eye, he's a more cleaner and composed defender 100%, it's just what you like to see sometimes, I think Gabriel's the more aggressive [and] combative [defender], wants the 1v1 duels, goes into challenges and comes out of it."

Arsenal icon Emmanuel Petit has urged his former to make a blockbuster move for Jadon Sancho this summer. The winger is set to leave Manchester United this summer and Petit believes the Emirates Stadium could be the perfect place for him.

"I was saying how impressed I was with Jadon Sancho in the Champions League on commentary - he looks like a new player, so fit, thin and explosive. He’s like dynamite on the pitch, so explosive on the ball, so hard to catch," he told Grosvenor Sport.

"He’s back to his best and Man United look so far away from them, so if Arsenal want him, why not? You can put the best player in the world at Man United at the moment and they’d look average in two months."

Isak holds Newcastle talks
Arsenal's top summer target Alexander Isak has held talks with Newcastle's Saudi chairman Yasir Al Rumayyan. The striker is being watched closely by the Gunners, though the Magpies have put a price tag of £120million on his head.

The Gunners will continue their pursuit despite that hefty fee though, with Mikel Arteta keen to boost his attacking options. Isak has now held talks with Newcastle chief Al Rumayyan, following his side's final home game of the season.

The Saudi businessman was on Tyneside to discuss the season and plans for the summer. Isak's situation is being prioritised, with Newcastle keen to hand the Swedish international a new contract.
