According to a report in Spain, Guardiola will be ready to wave ‘goodbye to Manchester City’ in 2025 with the Catalan giants Barcelona hoping to appoint him at the end of the season. These reports have since been followed up with the suggestion that Guardiola’s former assistant, Arteta, could be the one to take over at the Sky Blues.
It is understood that the ex-Arsenal captain is now ‘closer to Manchester City than staying at Arsenal’ and while the Gunners are likely to have another exciting season in 2024/25, it remains the case the ‘everything indicates that he (Arteta) will not extend his contract’ past 2025.
The report also adds: “Despite the attempts that the board has made to ensure that he stays at the Emirates Stadium for a long time, so far they have all been fruitless.
Speaking before their final day victory over Everton, Arteta opened up on his own contract talks, telling the Gooners that he would be holding conversations with the club over his future in the summer.
“That’s something that after the season, or whenever the right is we will talk and sit down”, Arteta confirmed. “What is important is to win now, to keep believing that we can continue to win. That’s the important thing. Whatever happens, it will be very emotional on the day (against Everton). It’s probably not the right moment to make any conclusions but afterwards we will have time to reflect.
“You have to go through the season we have to come to the point we have done and try to understand why. We have to find the ‘why’ and the ‘how’, we are going to do the next bit. That’s more important.”
Arteta was appointed assistant coach to Guardiola at Manchester City after retiring from the pitch in 2016. He returned to the Emirates- having played there from 2011-2016 - in 2019 as head coach and won the FA Cup in his first year.
