The Athletic Bilbao star is one of the most highly-rated players in La Liga and recently helped his boyhood club win the Copa del Rey title.
Nico Williams played a key role in that dramatic penalty shootout win and helped Ernesto Valverde end the club’s 40-year wait for silverware.
The 21-year-old signed a new contract at Athletic Bilbao in December, which included a release cause worth just over £40million.
However, the new deal also meant Williams emerged with a wage of close to £200,000.
Nico Williams transfer interest from Aston Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United
Williams is a player that is in the sights of Aston Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle. They have all been closely following him this season.
But sources have confirmed to HITC that, following talks with the player’s camp, the Premier League clubs have been ‘shocked’ by the demands that have been made.
HITC understands that Williams is asking for a deal worth £250,000, plus appearance money which would take him beyond £300,000 – It would also make him the highest-paid player at all the clubs talking to him.
Sources have told HITC that the clubs have been left ‘shocked’ and ‘staggered’ by Williams’s asking price.
Nico Williams and Barcelona
The English clubs believe that Williams may well be positioning himself to join Barcelona – who are interested in the winger and are ready to sell Raphinha in order to finance the move.
Xavi Hernandez, after losing out on the La Liga title to Real Madrid, has decided to stay at the club beyond this season after initially announcing that he was going to leave.
A player like Williams would fit very well into his system, especially given his ability to operate on the right, as well as the left.
The Spain international has 11 assists from his 29 La Liga matches, including seven goal involvements during their Copa del Rey triumph.
