After beating Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium and earning a hard earned point at the Etihad Stadium, Arsenal certainly looked favourites to win the Premier League title last season, for the first time since 2004.
However, defeats to Fulham at Christmas and a crushing loss to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in April made City the favourites for the title and Pep Guardiola’s side duly took advantage to win their fourth league crown in a row.
This summer will be key for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta as they bid to finally end the two decade title drought.
Jordan makes Arsenal prediction
Speaking on talkSPORT, Simon Jordan has given his verdict as to whether the North London club are indeed ready to beat City in the race for the league crown.
“Yeah, I’ve sort of put my colours to the mast, I think Arsenal will win the Premier League, I think there’s a natural progression,” Jordan said. “I do think they will because I think it’s a natural progression. I think ultimately you’ve gone from 84 points to 89 points.
“You look at the weaknesses and you go, ‘We’ve got a Champions League campaign which we were moderately successful in so we’ve proven that we’ve got a squad that’s capable of competing on two fronts.’
“A couple of improvements, the manager’s involvement, a couple of tactical decisions they got wrong in games against Aston Villa and over the Christmas period, and they’re in business.”
Arsenal’s time is now
One of the strengths of Arteta’s team is just how young and energetic they are. At times last season, they blew the opposition away with football that these sides couldn’t deal with.
This team have grown together and it is certainly not an unpopular opinion to state that the North London club could finally be ready to win the title.
If the Gunners sign another midfielder and a new centre-forward this summer, then they could finally lift that famous trophy next May.
