Over the weekend, reports emerged that Newcastle offered Liverpool the chance to sign Anthony Gordon while also asking for Jarell Quansah in the deal. The Reds turned down the approach, however, it was a very clear sign of what Newcastle feel they must do to avoid any potential punishment.
According to The Athletic, they must complete sales before tomorrow to avoid a potential points sanction next season. The Magpies would prefer for that to arrive through the exit of Yankuba Minteh, however that may not be possible considering their attempts to try and sell Gordon.
The 23-year-old could arguably be seen as Newcastle's third best player and if the worst-case scenario plays out, they may be forced into allowing either Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes, the two above Gordon, to leave. Interest from the Gunners in both is well-known but the money that would be required to sign either was always seen as unreasonable.
The chance to activate Guimaraes' £100million release clause expired just a few days ago while the minimum price tag for Isak is £126million which is double what Newcastle paid to sign him back in 2022. However, as the PSR deadline looms, Newcastle may have no choice but to entertain a departure.
With their surprising Gordon call in mind, it cannot be ruled out that at the eleventh hour Newcastle panic and are rushed into selling Isak or Guimaraes with Arsenal primed to take advantage. It would still cost the Gunners a significant amount but they would undoubtedly hold the cards.
The U-turn completed by Newcastle to part ways with one of Guimaraes or Isak would be monumental but absolutely nothing can be ruled out following their desperate attempt to offload Gordon and balance their financial books with just over 24 hours of the current financial year remaining.
Chelsea will also likely be watching closely following their recent enquiry into Isak with their financial situation far better now that Ian Maatsen has departed while Omai Hutchinson will also be moved on permanently.
