BBC journalist shares if Arsenal will return for Amadou Onana, talks held with Everton

Arsenal are “unlikely” to follow up their interest in Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, according to Shamoon Hafez.

The BBC journalist reported via his personal X account [20 June] that the Gunners held initial talks with the Toffees over a potential summer deal, though it seems the move is now unlikely.

It is understood that other Premier League and Champions League clubs have enquired about the Belgian, with Everton said to be “desperate” to sell him this summer. [Alan Nixon]

Will Amadou Onana leave Everton this summer?
Considering the amount of interest in the midfielder, the club will not be too worried that Arsenal are unlikely to return for their 22-year-old ace this summer despite holding initial talks at Goodison Park.

Onana is currently away with Belgium at Euro 2024 in Germany, attempting to impress on the international stage, and hopefully, for the Toffees, raise his price tag a little.

Sean Dyche will, of course, need to replace the player heading into the 2024/25 campaign due to the lack of depth in midfield if he were to leave, but the potential transfer fee cannot be ignored.

Everton’s issues with PSR this season have meant that both Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite have been linked with moves away in order to raise funds, though the latter is not a player the club want to let go.

If Onana were to leave for a significant fee this summer, the club would be much more likely to keep hold of their 21-year-old centre-back, who has just experienced a sensational season in the Premier League.

The summer transfer window has only just opened so there will be plenty of time for the Merseyside club to find a potential suitor. Dyche should have enough time to reinvest the funds from an Onana sale and revamp the current squad.
