Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool and Man Utd 'monitoring' European star with £51m release clause

Liverpool are currently still monitoring Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio ahead of the summer window, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano.

The Portugal international has developed into one of the hottest defensive prospects in Europe after winning two league titles. Starring under former managerial target Ruben Amorim, the 22-year-old has become a key starter at the back having played 49 times last season and 171 times for the club in total.

According to Romano, his release clause of £51m remains and he is still attracting attention from many top clubs. He wrote on X: “Manchester United and Liverpool have both been monitoring Gonçalo Inácio ahead of the summer transfer window. His release clause is worth €60m. Man United are still discussing internally how many centre-backs they want to bring in — for sure, at least one right-footed.”

For Liverpool, losing Joel Matip on a free has opened up discussions about bringing in a new defender. After all, their options are being considered at this very moment by new boss Arne Slot. Joe Gomez, who is naturally a centre-back, played just five times in the heart of defence as he covered at both full-back positions which is of some concern as it leaves just three senior defenders and Ibrahim Konate was criticised at the back end of the season by the likes of Jamie Carragher.

Inacio would be the left-footed centre-back that Liverpool have been chasing for some time. It was a target for Jurgen Klopp across the last year of his tenure and it would no doubt help to bring a balance to their back four. Inacio stands out for his ability to pass, carry the ball out, start and progress attacks and win tackles.

He is very much in the mould of a modern-day centre-back who can ‘do it all’ but it is unclear what Liverpool’s plans are for this position. Fans will get the chance to see him in action at the European Championships as he looks to add to the six caps (two goals) he has already.
