'I am told': Fabrizio Romano shares what he's now been told about Viktor Gyokeres signing for Arsenal

Arsenal’s hunt for a new number nine continues and once again we are hearing suggestions of former Coventry striker, Viktor Gyokeres.
The Swedish forward had a superb season in Portugal as he rattled in 43 goals and set up a further 15 for Ruben Amorim’s side as they won the league.

For Gyokeres, the obvious next step is to make a move to England and the Premier League and reports over the past week have suggested a deal with Arsenal is imminent.

However, nothing has moved on since those reports broke.

And speaking about the matter, Fabrizio Romano has shed some light on just where Arsenal stand when it comes to Gyokeres.

How Arsenal feel about signing Viktor Gyokeres, amid reports they’ve agree a deal
Speaking for CaughtOffside, Romano has shared what he has been told about the Gunners making a move for Gyokeres.

“In the last 24, 48 hours, we had some rumours about the deal being closed, being very advanced. I also saw something from Portugal, like almost completed and I am told this is not true,” Romano said.

“At the moment, Arsenal are not at that advanced stages of their negotiation for Gyokeres. They made contact on the player side already months ago, it was between April and May. They are also informed about the conditions of the €100million release clause, but also the cost of the deal in terms of salary and all the rest.

“They have still not decided what they really want to do in that position or who is the priority target. They want to take their time to assess the options, so at the moment with Gyokeres, it is not something imminent or close, but it’s an option.

“I don’t think Arsenal will go for crazy money [for Gyokeres] so it has to be maybe a different structure of the deal or Arsenal could look at different opportunities.”

While we know Gyokeres had a superb season with Sporting and really produced the goods, it’s still unclear whether he can do it on a tougher stage.

We’ve seen the likes of Darwin Nunez and others come from Portugal and struggle and that might well be playing into the mind of Arsenal here.

Of course, his power, speed and finishing cannot be questioned and Arsenal would be getting an option they simply don’t have.

But with the clause at nearly £85m and just one amazing season behind him in Portugal, it’s little wonder this one hasn’t quite been signed off just yet.
