Liverpool 'face' Bayern Munich transfer battle as Trent Alexander-Arnold sent blunt warning

Arne Slot will have it all to do this summer as he attempts to workout which players Liverpool require during the transfer window.

A case could be made for strengthening in all areas, though defence will surely be viewed as a priority position for Slot as he aims to build on the Reds' third-placed finish of last term.

Joel Matip has already headed for the Anfield exit door and there remain genuine question marks over Ibrahima Konate's performance levels to justify a regular starting spot alongside Virgil van Dijk.

James Trafford competition
Liverpool will reportedly face competition from Bayern Munich in the race to sign Burnley goalkeeper, James Trafford.

The Reds have recently been linked with a move for Trafford, along with Newcastle United, though will now have to contend with another club should they decide to pursue a deal.

Football Insider have claimed Bayern are also interested in the Englishman, with Vincent Kompany looking to bring one of the players he coached last season to the Allianz Arena.

Liverpool ECHO says: A move such as this will all depend on whether Caoimhin Kelleher leaves the club this summer. The early indications are that this could well be on the cards, ensuring Trafford could be someone Liverpool turn their attention to. The Burnley shot-stopper was particularly impressive in the game against the Reds at Turf Moor on Boxing Day and could be a shrewd acquisition.

Trent Alexander-Arnold prediction made
Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol cannot see Trent-Alexander Arnold starting for England during this summer's European Championships, despite the right-back putting in another impressive display for his country on Monday evening.

Alexander-Arnold got on the scoresheet in a 3-0 win over Bosnia and was influential in the victory, making the most passes (90), most crosses (7) and creating the most chances (5) of any player on the pitch.

Nicol, though, still does not believe the 25-year-old will miss out on a starting spot at the Euros. Speaking on ESPN FC after England's friendly triumph, the Scot said: “Trent Alexander-Arnold could’ve scored a hat-trick today and he will not start against Serbia. There’s no way in a million years that he starts as the right-back against Serbia, not a chance, and there’s no way he starts in the midfield.

“If Gareth Southgate is going to be positive, then it’s going to be Bellingham, Rice and Foden. If he’s going to be a little negative, then he’ll probably bring Conor Gallagher in and play him beside Rice, with Bellingham in front of them and Foden will go out to the left. There is no way I can see on that field that Trent Alexander-Arnold starts.

“I defy anybody to tell me why he’s going to start. From a defensive point of view, he won’t start. Gareth Southgate will want to make sure that the back four is solid, so that means he doesn’t start there. He’s not gonna gamble and just throw him in for the first game of the Euros, because why?

“You’ve got Foden, who didn’t play. In fact, it was pretty much a reserve team. Every which way you look at it, it’s not looking good for Trent Alexander-Arnold.”

Liverpool ECHO says: There is every chance Alexander-Arnold does not start for the Three Lions in Germany, though this will not be down to a lack of talent. Southgate has been experimenting with the Reds' right-back for some time now and has never seemed fully sold on the Liverpool vice-captain. There is intense competition for places in the current England squad, though there must surely be a way for the West Derby-born star to feature?
