It was Calafiori’s own-goal that ultimately settled the scores, with Spain securing their passage to the knockout stages thanks to a 1-0 victory. In truth, it could have been much more comfortable for them.
Despite his own goal, it was thanks in no small part to Calafiori that Italy managed to avoid a heavier defeat. The 22-year-old’s performance is certain to have caught the eye of one or two of his admirers.
Liverpool could well be among them, with The Athletic reporting this week that the Reds have already made an inquiry for his services. They aren’t alone, with Newcastle, Brighton and West Ham also linked, while Juventus is touted as the leading contender for the Bologna star.
Liverpool fans though are certainly sold on Calafiori, with supporters on social media in no doubt that the club should move quickly in order to secure his services.
Liverpool will almost certainly be on the lookout for a new center-back this summer. With Joel Matip now gone, Virgil van Dijk entering the final year of his contract and Ibrahima Konate’s injury problems, the Reds’ back line is in need of bolstering.
