£85m 'superstar' forward may have just opened the door for Liverpool to sign him this summer - opinion

Liverpool are waiting patiently before making their move in this year’s transfer window.

After the scrummage that was Liverpool’s final summer under Jurgen Klopp, things have been incredibly quiet so far at Anfield.

By this time 12 months ago Liverpool had already signed both Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. The fans were happy and there were still two more arrivals two come.

However, buying four players was absolutely not the norm for the Liverpool owners. Supporters have become used to seeing two, one, or even no new players join the first-team squad during the off-season.

While that looks almost certain to be the case once again this summer, the Reds may still make one big splash in the market.

Mohammed Kudus makes John Heitinga claim
Ahead of the transfer window opening, it was claimed that Liverpool will be in the market for a new forward.

Despite the fact that Arne Slot already has a number of very useful options to call on, it looked like the Reds wanted one more.

One player to have been suggested as a possible target has been West Ham attacker Mohammed Kudus. Kudus has been linked with Liverpool having had an excellent first season at the London Stadium.

Kudus has an £85m release clause which would make him an incredibly expensive signing for the Reds. But as a rare, potentially elite left-footed forward – deemed a ‘superstar’ in the making no less – maybe he could be worth it.

Interestingly, if Liverpool really do want the 23-year-old, then the player himself could have just opened a door to make that possible.

Although the cost of the deal could be incredibly prohibitive, it sounds like Liverpool would have no trouble getting Kudus onboard.

As he’s often stated, Kudus is a big fan of Thiago Alcantara. With Thiago gone, some may have felt that chances of signing the Ghanaian had waned.

But as Kudus told Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur, he is actually a huge supporter of new Liverpool assistant coach John Heitinga.

What has Kudus said about John Heitinga?
Heitinga is a really interesting appointment to Liverpool’s coaching staff. The former Everton player came across Kudus during a spell as interim manager at Ajax as well as at West Ham last year, where Heitinga was on David Moyes’ backroom team.

And according to Kudus, Heitinga is one of the best coaches he has ever worked under.

“I felt very good under Heitinga. He is the best trainer I have had at Ajax,” he says. “Apart from the training aspect, I also have a very high regard for him in terms of standards and values. Personally, I would have loved to work with him longer.

“He is a top trainer, and I really appreciated his efforts to make the players better at the time,” adds Kudus. “When he [Heitinga] took over for the rest of the season, he made an immediate impact. It got better.

“When we met again, there were immediate things that connected us. He tried to make me and all the other players better. I am very grateful to him for our time at West Ham.”

Although it’s hardly a ‘come and get me plea,’ it’s easy to see why Kudus would now be more open to a move to Liverpool. Let’s see if the Reds see fit to make a move for him.
