The organisation have announced that the new rules will be rolled out to all UEFA matches in the upcoming season. It will therefore impact Arsenal’s Champions League campaign.
The Gunners qualified for the competition via their second-place finish in the Premier League last season. They will look to better the quarter-final position they earned last season after falling to a 3-2 aggregate defeat to German giants Bayern Munich.
The change will see referees have an open dialogue with teams to explain key decisions, including ones made with the assistance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). However, the explanations will only be provided to the team captain, who are the only players entitled to speak to the official and ask for the explanation in a respectful manner.
The change also means that captains take responsibility for their teammates’ actions towards the referee, with captains expected to ask them to keep their distance and not surround the official.
If the captain of a team is the goalkeeper, then teams are asked to nominate one outfield player to ask for explanations from the referee on behalf of the captain. If players ignore the rules, then they will be shown a yellow card for dissent.
