Arsenal interested in Argentina’s Olympics goalscorer

Diego Monroig reports for ESPN (via BolaVIP) that Ezequiel Fernandez’s camp have received information that Arsenal are interested in buying him this summer.
The Gunners reportedly want to complete the signing ahead of the 2024/25 season, though they’re yet to submit an official offer for him.

Arsenal have reportedly been watching Fernandez for a while now, with claims of a scouting mission at the Pre-Olympic Tournament in January. Marquinhos was also playing at the event with Brazil.

For the time being, Fernandez is away at the Olympic Games with Argentina, having qualified through that January tournament.

Fernandez certainly isn’t doing much to reduce the asking price for his signature with his performances at the Olympics, scoring an excellent goal against Iraq on Saturday.

With Argentina losing their Olympic opener to Morocco, the team were desperate for a win against Iraq, who had won against Ukraine in their own opening fixture.

Argentina took an early lead through Thiago Almada, but were pegged back by Aymen Hussein just before half time.

Luciano Gondou retook the lead for Argentina in the 62nd minute, but the game remained tense until Fernandez’s 85th-minute settler. Argentina now know a draw against Ukraine would send them to the knockout stages.

Playing in a central midfield role for club and country, Fernandez has made 20 appearances for Boca Juniors so far in 2024. The 22-year-old has a contract with his current club until 2028.
