The Italian defender is said to have agreed personal terms with the Gunners, and a deal appears to be edging closer.
Sometimes a transfer can come out of left-field, and this is certainly one of those situations.
Indeed, earlier this summer it looked as though Calafiori was set to join Juventus, but now, a move to the Emirates appears to be in the offing.
Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing Arsenal’s interest in Calafiori, and he says one of his sources in Italy is shocked by the Gunners’ move for the defender, claiming he thought a move to Juventus was inevitable.
Italian source shocked by Arsenal’s move for Riccardo Calafiori
Jones shared what he’s heard from his source in Italy.
“I had heard a month ago that Juve were just going to get that deal done. I checked back in yesterday with my source in Italy who is well-versed on all things Juventus and he said it’s a big surprise and it’s caused unrest,” Jones said.
“Basically a deal was in place with the player, it was looking good, and then suddenly Bologna tried pushing him to the Premier League, Arsenal bite and now we’re looking at a £42m deal,” Jones said.
Arsenal move more alluring
Unfortunately for Juventus, we’re going to see more and more of this in the coming years.
The financial disparity between the Premier League and other European leagues continues to grow, and England is seen as the top destination for many of the world’s best players these days.
Once upon a time, Juventus would’ve been able to cherry-pick the best Italian talent in Serie A, but now, those players may be more keen to move to England, hence why Calafiori appears to be Arsenal-bound.
