Interest in Williams was growing even before his dazzling Euro 2024 campaign, after which he embarked on holiday to ponder his final decision on his future.
Barcelona have pushed hard for Williams' signature, while Arsenal are also known to be keen on striking a deal. Chelsea backed away from a move earlier this summer amid concerns over the finances involved but have remained observant on the sidelines.
It was first revealed by MARCA that Williams had made a final decision on a summer transfer, but his verdict was not known at the time.
However, SPORT now clarify that Williams has opted to remain with Athletic and reject all the interest in his services.
Nico Williams
Williams was open to a move to Barcelona and 90min understands officials at Camp Nou had hope that the Euro 2024 winner would be prepared to adjust his financial demands to make a move possible, but their hopes of landing Williams' signature appear to have faded.
It is claimed that Williams reached this decision by himself after he was not convinced that leaving Athletic at this point would be the best move for his career.
There is, however, no mention of a new contract with Athletic. Williams remains tied to the club until 2027 on a deal which will continue to include a €58m (£49m) release clause unless fresh terms are agreed.
As for Barcelona, the focus will now switch to RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo, who the Blaugrana had hoped to sign alongside Williams.
