'Discussions': Arsenal are now talking about turning ‘special’ midfielder into a defender next season

Arsenal’s academy has produced some special players in recent years.
The likes of Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith Rowe have all become brilliant players in their own rights, all representing England at senior level on separate occasions.

While Saka, Smith Rowe and Nketiah have all been huge academy success stories, eyes are now turning towards the next generation, and one player who has been touted for big things is Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The teenage midfielder has been described as a ‘special’ player in the past, and according to James McNicholas, speaking on the Arsecast, the Gunners have an interesting plan in mind when it comes to the youngster’s development.

Arsenal’s plan for Myles Lewis-Skelly
According to McNicholas, there have been some internal discussions at Arsenal about turning Lewis-Skelly into a left-back to play an inverted role.

“There has been a lot of excitement about Myles Lewis-Skelly, but I feel that part of the pitch may be more congested,” McNicholas said.

“I see him at the base of the midfield but there have been discussions about moving him to left-back as well as a Zinchenko-style inverted left-back, but I think his best position is at number six.”

Lewis-Skelly could flourish
While becoming a defender doesn’t sound like the most glamorous of career moves, these sorts of position changes can completely transform a player’s career.

Let’s not forget, Bukayo Saka originally came through at Arsenal as a left-back, but now, he’s one of the best right wingers on the planet.

Of course, Lewis-Skelly is going through the opposite trajectory as he looks like he could become a more defensive-minded player, but if he can impress in training in this position, a route could open up for the youngster to break into the Arsenal first-team.

Lewis-Skelly has long been one to watch, and now, there’s even more reason to keep an eye on this young man.
