Mikel Arteta has sensibly decided against using Smith Rowe in either of Arsenal’s first two stateside friendlies, instead turning to the likes of Ethan Nwaneri.
Smith Rowe is close to leaving Arsenal for Fulham, a move that should help revive his career and once again help him realise his rich potential.
And whilst fans in north London will be reluctant to see the Hale-Ender leave, they’ll likely recognise that Smith Rowe isn’t progressing at the club, who need a better suited option.
Right now, the left-sided number eight role is still the most glaring vacancy in Arsenal’s midfield, the position vacated by Granit Xhaka.
Declan Rice eventually proved a better fit than Kai Havertz in the role last season, but it’s clearly an area in which Arteta needs better depth.
Arsenal have plenty of offensive-minded talents who can play there, the likes of Fabio Vieira and Nwaneri, but not a well-rounded number eight.
Arsenal ready to advance in talks to sign Mikel Merino next week
Once Arsenal conclude a deal for Riccardo Calafiori, it seems like they will then turn their attention to Merino.
The Spaniard was ‘incredible’ for his country at the Euros and Merino could be Arsenal’s new Xhaka, a left-footer with a similarly complete skill-set.

And to that end, Fabrizio Romano has now shared an update on X detailing that Arsenal are ready to ‘advance in talks’ for Merino next week.
The journalist stated that Real Sociedad’s asking price will be key, but said the Gunners are very well-positioned.
Romano shared: “Arsenal are prepared to advance in talks with Mikel Merino’s camp next week, after positive contacts.
“He’s not only name on [the] list but well positioned; price tag requested by Real Sociedad will be key.
“Arteta appreciates him; as soon as ESR leaves, Arsenal can proceed.”
So whilst Smith Rowe’s departure will be difficult for some Arsenal fans, it’s clear that funds raised will be important in improving Arteta’s squad depth.
The England international doesn’t have an obvious position in Arteta’s plans, and effectively replacing Smith Rowe with Merino makes sense from all angles.
That being said, Arteta’s comments on Nwaneri’s Arsenal future after the Manchester United win were very interesting.
