Fabio Vieira put the Gunners ahead from 12 yards before Scott McTominay found an equaliser. Andre Onana then denied Kai Havertz, while Jonny Evans put Erik ten Hag's side ahead, beating Karl Hein with ease.
Jakub Kiwior failed to draw Arsenal level, missing the target. Ethan Wheatley couldn't capitalise on the Gunners' blunder, gifting Gabriel Martinelli the chance to pull one back – which he did.
Christian Eriksen put the Red Devils back on track to make it 3-2. Then, Gabriel equalised for the north Londoners with a tremendous strike. In the build-up to his spot-kick, Onana ushered the Arsenal defender to his left, telling him where to place his penalty.
The Manchester United goalkeeper quickly regretted his poor attempt at the dark arts after Gabriel blasted the ball into the top corner, where he pointed. The Brazilian stared Onana down before telling him to be quiet.
Jadon Sancho then fired the final penalty of the shootout to seal the victory for the Red Devils. After the game, Gabriel uploaded a post on Instagram, with the caption: "Thanks for the support Gunners in LA [United States flag emoji and red heart emoji]."
Speaking to reporters after the game, Mikel Arteta was quizzed on his side's performance. The Spaniard said: "A really good test for us. Playing in a different stadium, different pitch conditions, four metres narrower, five metres shorter, against a top opponent. We were 1-0 down and to play in this context is really good for us because we have to see what it’s like and adapt. So really pleased."
Then, when asked if his players are ready for the new Premier League season, Arteta added: "There are different layers and different things that we need to improve and get better at. We have good foundations at the moment.
