Last week, it was reported that Newcastle floated a total package of £100 million for the 23-year-old, currently on international duty with the Three Lions at Euro 2024. That valuation might drop a bit going forward, mostly if Gordon decides to force his way out to join his childhood club and the one he started his amateur career at before joining Everton.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle is willing to start negotiations for a deal worth an initial £70 million.
Gordon moved to Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for £45 million and he instantly became a key player for the Magpies. He scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists in 35 Premier League games last season, perhaps in the best overall performance among players at NUFC over the past 12 months.
Gordon’s previous stint with Liverpool ended when he was let go at the age of 11. He went on to build a successful career with Everton before his transfer to Newcastle. Despite Newcastle’s financial concerns due to the Profitability and Sustainability Rules, the club secured just under £70 million by selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.
The Magpies’ recent sales have eased the pressure to sell Gordon, but the youngster could decide to listen to the Reds pitch in what could end up seeing him bolting out of Tyneside unexpectedly.
There are concerns that Gordon’s interest may have been piqued by Liverpool’s renewed pursuit, and this is starting to look like new sporting director Paul Mitchell’s first huge business to deal with during the summer transfer market following his recent appointment.
Liverpool’s interest in Gordon, however, is believed to be contingent on the departure of Luis Diaz, with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona reportedly interested. In the case of Diaz's departure, the Reds might have the money to launch a hefty bid for Gordon; if Diaz stays, however, it’s going to be hard for Liverpool to pony up as much money as Newcastle’s believed to be asking for the young lad.
