Liverpool transfer news live: Anthony Gordon 'quick deal', Joe Gomez latest, Arsenal reaction

We're now into August, and Liverpool fans will no doubt be expecting their club to start making moves in the summer transfer window soon. One name in particular is dominating the headlines.

Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move to Anfield throughout the summer. Indeed, the Newcastle winger is the closest Liverpool has come to a new signing.

Reports earlier in the summer revealed how talks with the Magpies broke down over a transfer when Jarell Quansah was requested in return. On Wednesday though, it emerged that a $97m (£75m/€89m) deal had been agreed, only for Newcastle to pull out after easing their PSR worries.

The speculation isn't dying down though, and there are suggestions Gordon could yet secure a move to Liverpool this summer. Meanwhile, Joe Gomez is the latest player to have question marks over his future. A transfer to Newcastle fell through earlier in the summer, but the defender could still be on the move.

Arne Slot reaction after Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal
After Liverpool played with two false nines — Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai — against Real Betis, it was nice to see the return of a proper senior striker against Arsenal. Diogo Jota was back in action after coming back from his holiday.

Arne Slot's side won 2-1 against the Gunners thanks to first-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Fabio Carvalho and this game was much more instructive of how the new head coach is going to set up. Jota played 45 minutes and afterwards, Slot explained what he wants to see from his number nines.

Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are still missing but Jota got into some good positions against Arsenal. The other senior forwards, including Luis Diaz, will rejoin the group when they return to Merseyside next week.

"It helps to have someone who naturally plays in that position," Slot told reporters post-match when asked about Jota's performance. "It helps to have a striker who is smart and intelligent and knows when to make the deeper runs."

Joe Gomez transfer latest
It also emerged yesterday that a move to Newcastle fell through for Joe Gomez earlier in the summer. Liverpool.com understands that the Reds want to keep the player and value him highly

But a move away from Anfield could still be a possibility for the defender, with the Daily Mail reporting that Gomez is open to a 'new challenge'.

Should the 27-year-old move on, it would almost certainly leave Liverpool needing to sign a new defender this summer, although you could argue they need one anyway.
