United, having already strengthened their forward line this summer with the acquisition of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, have been linked with England international Toney. Arsenal are also believed to be long-term admirers of the striker.
After bouncing back from his eighth month betting ban, Toney was named in the England squad for Euro 2024, largely down to his impressive goal tally during the 2022/23 season. The 28 year old netted an impressive 21 goals in 35 appearances.
However, any plans United and Arsenal had of boosting their offensive ranks with Toney may have taken a hit due to confirmation of a meniscus injury sustained by Brentford's summer signee Thiago, who has cost a club-record fee.
The ill-fated preseason moment for Thiago came during Brentford's friendly against AFC Wimbledon last Saturday where he managed a brace in their 5-2 victory. An official release from the Bees declared: "The striker is unavailable for this evening's game against Benfica and will have further scans next week to determine the extent of the injury. More information will be released in due course."
The news comes in the wake of former United midfielder Paul Scholes's comments to Sky Sports, where he highlighted the need for a prolific striker at Old Trafford. "When I think about Manchester United, I think about brilliant centre-forwards," said Scholes.
"I think they've had one young one last year in Rasmus Hojlund who they have had to rely on and it was a little bit unfair. He's a young player, still learning the game."
Scholes also touched upon the recent acquisition of another promising youngster, Zirkzee, but maintained his stance on the necessity of an experienced goal-scorer. "They've bought another young one. I would like to see an experienced centre-forward come and help with that and virtually guarantee goals. Whether that man is out there, I don't know. But I think they need somebody who is proven and [can] go on and be successful next year."
