It was claimed by the Daily Mail on Saturday that Gordon had been offered to Liverpool as part of a swap deal that would have seen defender Jarell Quansah going the other way.
The proposal was part of Newcastle's desperate attempts to raise funds through player sales amid concerns that they could breach the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
But the PSR deadline expired on June 30, with Newcastle confirming the sale of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £33 million shortly afterwards.
The Telegraph claimed that the Magpies never had any intention of selling Gordon or Alexander Isak, who are considered as two of their top three key players alongside Bruno Guimaraes.
However, The Athletic now report that Gordon leaving the club could have been a serious possibility.

It is claimed by a source that Newcastle did consider the 21-year-old as a potential departure, with 'unsavoury decisions' having to be 'contemplated for financial, not footballing, reasons'.
And the report also claims that Newcastle 'hold fears' that Gordon's head may have been turned by a potential move back to Merseyside for the former Everton star.

Fabrizio Romano has said that Liverpool do 'appreciate' the winger, but they were not willing to accept Newcastle's initial swap deal proposal involving Quansah, who they want to keep at the club.
PSG's interest in Gordon has also thrown an additional spanner into the works.
Newcastle have already announced three permanent transfers after the PSR deadline, with goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos both arriving.
In addition, left-back Lewis Hall has signed for a fee of £28 million from Chelsea - the highest fee the Magpies have ever paid for a teenager.
Whether they can keep hold of Gordon, though, remains to be seen.
