'Really excited': £42m player is desperate to sign for Arsenal and is 'waiting' for the move - Romano

Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on one of Arsenal’s key targets in this summer’s transfer window.

The Gunners are yet to stamp their authority in the market. They have turned David Raya’s loan into a permanent deal, but nothing else has happened with respect to incomings.

That is expected to change in the coming weeks. Arsenal are really pushing to get a few new names through the door, and they seem close to completing one deal.

A really talented player is said to be ‘waiting’ for Arsenal to sign him this summer. Romano says he is ‘really excited’ about a move to the Emirates.

What Riccardo Calafiori thinks about Arsenal’s project under Mikel Arteta
Mikel Arteta has transformed Arsenal.

The Gunners were in a mess when the Spaniard took charge of the club in 2019, but he has turned them into serious title contenders now.

After finishing in second place two seasons in a row, Arteta wants to get over that final hurdle, and he needs a few top-quality additions to achieve that objective.

Riccardo Calafiori is a key target for Arsenal, and the Gunners have been pushing to sign him since Italy’s elimination from Euro 2024.

Arteta has privately spoken to Calafiori about Arsenal’s project and he seems to have convinced the Bologna defender to make the move to the Emirates.

Romano has revealed that Calafiori believes Arsenal have ‘one of the best projects in the world’ right now, and he’s now desperate to complete the switch to North London.

However, Arsenal and Bologna are yet to reach an agreement over the deal, with the Italian club demanding £42 million (€50m) to sell him, Romano revealed on X.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, the journalist added: “Calafiori is really excited about this possibility to work under Mikel Arteta, to try and experience the Premier League.

“He believes that Arsenal is probably one of the best projects in the world, with many ambitious and talented players.

“So Calafiori is really waiting for Arsenal now, it depends on Bologna, but the negotiations are ongoing.”

Calafiori’s arrival could push one player out of Arsenal
Calafiori would be a fantastic signing for Arsenal.

The Italian can play in the heart of the defence as well as at left-back, and his profile fits Arteta’s system perfectly. He could prove to be a sensational addition if the move does go through.

However, Calafiori is very similar to one current Arsenal player – Jakub Kiwior.

The Pole, like the Bologna star, can play in central defence as well as at left-back, and most of his characteristics are nearly identical to that of Calafiori.

That’s why reports have claimed that Arsenal could sell Kiwior if Calafiori arrives, which would be a shame as the former is a talented player.

However, it makes no sense to have both of them in the squad.
