Report: Club think their 'world-class' player is going to leave now after claims Arsenal want to sign him

Arsenal may have received a boost in their pursuit of one of their key transfer targets.

The Gunners are yet to make a signing in this window apart from turning David Raya’s loan from Brentford into a permanent deal.

With Euro 2024 and Copa America coming to an end soon, we expect a lot more movement at Arsenal and many other clubs in the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his squad this summer. He knows where his side needs reinforcements, and Arsenal have been linked with plenty of names who could make a serious difference.

There is now an update on one of them.

Arsenal receive Mikel Merino boost
Mikel Merino has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this summer.

The Spaniard is currently a part of Luis de la Fuente’s squad at the Euro 2024 and could make an appearance in the final against England on Sunday.

Irrespective of what happens there, Merino’s future will be up for debate after the tournament ends, and a number of clubs are keen to sign him.

Arsenal are one of them, with reports claiming that Arteta is personally trying to convince Merino to leave Real Sociedad and move to the Emirates.

It will be interesting to see what will happen with Merino, but if El Diario Vasco are to be believed, there is some good news for Arsenal fans.

The report, as translated by SportWitness, claims that Real Sociedad think Merino is going to leave the club this summer because he hasn’t responded to their contract offer. The Spaniard has already entered the final year of his deal.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that Arsenal are the club who are ‘bidding the most’ to sign Merino.

The Gunners have the financial muscle to beat the two other clubs interested in signing the Spain international – Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Merino is expected to make a decision on his future after the Euro 2024 final on Sunday.

Why Arsenal want to sign Merino
Arsenal’s midfield is among the best in the Premier League.

Martin Odegaard has been a mainstay in the number 10 role, while Declan Rice has impressed almost every time he has played – both as a number six and also in a box-to-box role.

The likes of Jorginho, Thomas Partey and Kai Havertz have played in the other midfield position at Arsenal, and as good as they have been, many feel that the Gunners could do with an upgrade there.

Merino, who is great on the ball, is a huge physical presence and is absolutely incredible in aerial duels, checks all the boxes Arteta wants in the middle of the park.

He has already shown his quality for Spain at Euro 2024, and if Arsenal can get Merino, we think he’ll finally replace Granit Xhaka in that left-sided number-eight role.

With less than a year left on his contract, there’s a chance Arsenal could sign Merino for a very affordable fee. He could prove to be a huge bargain if they can get him.
