Report: Liverpool were offered 'one of the best players in the Premier League' for £85m

Liverpool are yet to get off the mark in the summer transfer window, but chances are they’ll be busy in the coming weeks.

The Reds have a new manager on board in Arne Slot, who has taken over after Jurgen Klopp stepped down from the Anfield hotseat.

Liverpool’s hierarchy will be eager to give Slot all the tools he needs to hit the ground running for the Reds.

Although Liverpool are yet to complete a signing, they were involved in some intense speculation with a Premier League star towards the end of last month.

Liverpool said to have been offered Anthony Gordon for £85million
The player in question is Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, who was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool ahead of 30 June.

As the financial year came to a close, the Magpies tried to sell players in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability regulations.

Newcastle ended up sanctioning the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, ending the speculation around Gordon.

Since then, there have been conflicting reports regarding the short-lived transfer saga.

For instance, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook claimed that “Liverpool asked about Gordon’s availability (but) Newcastle stated player was not for sale that’s as far as it went.”

However, GiveMeSport have reported that the Magpies did offer to sell the 23-year-old to the Reds, for a fee of around £85million.

‘Naturally, there is an element of rewriting when any deal doesn’t come off, and Newcastle sources maintain it was Liverpool who reached out,’ they wrote.

‘But sources close to Liverpool insist they were presented with the chance to sign the 23-year-old for close to £85million.

‘Gordon, for his part, was keen on returning to his boyhood club, but nothing progressed.

‘Although the figure quoted was around £15million less than the £100million Liverpool believed Newcastle would ask for, it was still deemed too high.

‘Liverpool remain admirers of Gordon, but won’t try to sign him unless the price drops significantly.’

Gordon transfer saga unlikely to carry on
The Gordon to Liverpool rumours appeared all of a sudden in late June, but once the PSR deadline passed, they slowed down considerably.

It’s not like Newcastle need the money, and with Gordon being such a crucial player for the Magpies, there’s virtually no chance they’ll consider selling him this summer.

After all, Gordon was “one of the best players in the Premier League” last season, as Jamie Carragher has said.

That said, Liverpool aren’t short of attacking players. Indeed, with Cody Gakpo impressing at Euro 2024, there’s a good chance Slot will be eager to make more use of him next term.
