Report: Mikel Arteta has decided he wants to keep £34m Arsenal player deemed 'not good enough' last season

Amid all of the changes that seem possible at Arsenal this summer, Mikel Arteta has now made one important transfer decision.
Right now Edu and his recruitment team seem to be interested in several new signings.

Take Sunday evening’s Euro 2024 final as an example, Arsenal have been extensively linked with three or four players in England and Spain’s starting eleven.

On Spain’s side Arsenal are said to be seriously interested in signing Athletic Club’s Nico Williams as well as Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino.

Of course, to sign all or even half of the names mentioned, Arsenal will need to sell some of their existing squad, including players that Arteta has signed.

And based on his contributions last season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Arsenal decided that it was a good time to sell Fabio Vieira.

Mikel Arteta still believes Fabio Vieira can excel at Arsenal next season
Arsenal signed Vieira from FC Porto in 2022 for £34m, and despite his rich talent, the 24-year-old is yet to make his mark in north London.

Yes, Vieria has enjoyed some excellent moments, but hasn’t sustained any form for more than a fortnight – and was actually labelled ‘not good enough’ by Paul Merson in last season.

That being said, according to a report by FootballTransfers, Arteta isn’t willing to give up on Vieira just yet.

The Arsenal manager is keen to keep Vieira the club this summer, believing that the best is yet to come from the attacking midfielder who had to undergo groin surgery last season.

Arteta admires Vieira’s technical prowess, his versatility and his ability to be impactful in multiple midfield positions.

Perhaps the Arsenal manager still envisions that Vieira can play as a number eight behind Kai Havertz, or maybe even pose as backup for Martin Odegaard.

Either way, Arteta will need to lean on his extended squad more often next season to avoid fatigue in the second half of the campaign – a problem which arguably came back to bite Arsenal again.

All that being said, and in the spirit of not letting gems leave the club, Arsenal simply can’t afford to lose one youngster to Borussia Dortmund this summer.
