’Shut up’: Steve Nicol stunned by what he is hearing from Mikel Arteta before Arsenal's season begins

Another season and another chance for Mikel Arteta to finally push Arsenal over the Premier League title line.

It has been a drama-filled five years for the former midfielder at the Emirates, from fans calling for his head early on to many now believing in this project.

As always, Arsenal are on their pre-season tour of the USA and supporters are now getting to hear from their manager via various media channels.

Ever since Mikel Arteta took to the main hotseat, he has always been pretty blunt and forthright when discussing matters.

One thing Arteta can’t argue about is the backing he has received from the top, including spending a club-record amount on Declan Rice last summer.

And now, sources have told HITC that Arsenal have scheduled a medical for Riccardo Calafiori as he closes in on a transfer.

Despite that, Arteta has made it clear that he needs to enhance certain areas of his squad after Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City last season.

But Steve Nicol simply isn’t having any of it, as he is frustrated that the excuses have come out already before a ball has been kicked in the Premier League.

The Liverpool legend was visibly annoyed as he told Arteta to ‘shut up’ and explained what he should have said instead, as he told ESPN.

“Do you know what, I don’t want to listen to Arsenal and Arteta talking about ‘what we need to do, we want to improve in positions, we need a bigger squad’. I don’t want to hear that at this time of the year,” said Nicol.

“I want to hear some positivity. ‘We want to win the title. We think we have enough to win the title. We just have to get better. We have to take advantage whenever we get ourselves in front’.

“I don’t want to listen to ‘oh, we need more cover in positions’. Shut up, please! How about you go? ‘We can do it this year. We have the ability and we have the players to win this’. That’s what I want to hear. I don’t want to hear excuses. Once they start playing the games, there will be plenty of time to make excuses. I don’t want to hear it before a ball is kicked.”

Arsenal’s Premier League title push
You feel it’s now or never. If Arsenal don’t win the title next season, then it will be interesting to see how the crowd react.

Something has got to give sooner rather than later because Arsenal can’t keep spending money without delivering the title.

The one name that constantly has a transfer link with Arsenal is Ivan Toney, whose contract expires in 12 months and the player wants to move.
