'Special' 17-year-old can be Arsenal's Kobbie Mainoo, Arteta needs to give him a chance - opinion

In pre-season the best of Arsenal’s Hale End talents will once again get the chance to impress Mikel Arteta in the United States.
Arsenal fans are excited to see Ethan Nwaneri get his chance this season, a player who is expected to finally play a first team role.

Nwaneri made his Arsenal debut in 2022 at 15 years, five months and 23 days old, but hasn’t featured significantly since.

Instead, the Arsenal midfielder has remained with the club’s Premier League 2 side, readying himself for when Arteta comes calling.

This season it seems as if there’s a clear plan in place for Nwaneri, who may head out on loan if Arteta doesn’t see sufficient opportunities in his first team.

However, the same can’t necessarily be said for Myles Lewis-Skelly, at least in the public eye.

Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly are considered the two shining lights of Arsenal’s academy right now, but Nwaneri is the more famous name.

But also 17-years-old, it’s something of a surprise that Lewis-Skelly isn’t also being talked about more.

Myles Lewis-Skelly can be Arsenal’s Kobbie Mainoo
It was recently claimed that Arsenal were considering training Lewis-Skelly as an inverted left-back, given he’s already a ‘special’ talent in midfield.

And anyone who has watched Lewis-Skelly at youth level will know that he definitely has the talent to one day be a starter for Arsenal, a player who should also have an England career.

Arteta is said to want to add a new midfielder to his squad this summer, likely a number eight.

Mikel Merino could be Arsenal’s new Granit Xhaka, a deal the club should definitely chase, but the Gunners also need to be mindful of their young talent.

Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly need chances this season, they need the opportunity to prove that they’ve got the ability to do what Kobbie Mainoo is doing at Manchester United.

Amario Cozier-Duberry has now slipped through Arsenal’s fingers, and they can’t let the same happen with Lewis-Skelly.

Judging by reports, Arsenal have a clear plan for Nwaneri, but they can’t forget Lewis-Skelly, who is equally as talented.
