West Ham table bid for £32m striker as Arsenal plot bargain free agent swoop

We begin Saturday morning’s Premier League transfer rumours roundup with news of West Ham and their apparent pursuit of a striker. According to recent reports from Spain, the Hammers are keen on Villarreal forward Alexander Sorloth, formerly of Crystal Palace.

Now, El Periódico Mediterráneo take things one step further by suggesting that the Hammers are among a handful of clubs who have tabled offers for the Norwegian. It is understood that Roma and Atletico Madrid have also bid for the 28-year-old, with the former’s proposal of £25.3 million the most attractive at this stage. That being said, Villarreal are still holding out for the £32 million release clause that is written into Sorloth’s contract.

The 3AM Verdict: Sorloth struggled during his last stint in England, but has looked good in Spain, and scored 26 times in 41 outings across all competitions last season. Whether he is worth £32 million, however, and whether West Ham have any kind of inclination to meet that kind of valuation, remains to be seen.

Arsenal consider Roberto
Elsewhere, Arsenal are reportedly in the picture to sign free agent Sergi Roberto this summer, according to Spanish outlet Sport. The 32-year-old is without a club after leaving Barcelona last month, and would be available on a free transfer if he were to sign.

It is understood, however, that Barca are eager to offer him a one-year extension to his stay in Catalonia, and that the player himself is open to the idea. Indeed, reports suggest that the two parties have reached an agreement behind closed doors, but nothing has been made official, and now Arsenal could look to hijack the deal. For his part, Roberto is said to be ‘personally attracted to the Premier League’.

The 3AM Verdict: This could be a smart piece of business from Arsenal. Roberto is a quality player capable of playing at full-back or in midfield, and for a free transfer, he could provide wonderful depth and trophy-winning experience to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Liverpool could still sign Gordon
And finally, journalist David Lynch has told the Anfield Agenda that he believes Liverpool could still sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon this summer. The England international was linked with an £85 million move to the Reds earlier in the window, but talk over a prospective transfer has cooled in recent weeks.

Lynch is of the opinion that Arne Slot’s side are still in with a chance of landing their man, however. He said: “On Anthony Gordon I think that’s one that has a real chance of being revived maybe later in the window. Because that contract situation is there. That leaves Newcastle in a weak position in terms of negotiating even though they’ve got past all the PSR trouble that they’ve got. The player would desperately love to play for Liverpool and there’s all that reported interest in Luis Diaz.” Newcastle are understood to be preparing a new contract offer for Gordon in an effort to fend off further interest in their asset, suggesting that there is the potential for the winger to be tempted by a more lucrative offer from elsewhere.

The 3AM Verdict: Gordon has grown into a really dangerous attacking talent, and it is easy to envisage him slotting into Liverpool’s side, especially given his boyhood support of the club. Newcastle will be keen to hang on to him for as long as possible, but this could be one to watch - if not in this window, then certainly in windows to come.
