What Anthony Gordon has said about Liverpool amid transfer update with Newcastle stance clear

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has not been shy when talking about Liverpool throughout his career. The boyhood Reds supporter spent some time in the academy set-up at Anfield before moving across town to their Merseyside rivals Everton.

While the Magpies are clear they do not wish to sell their talismanic winger this summer and it would take an astronomical bid for them to even consider a deal, fresh reports claim Arne Slot's side are looking to move quickly to sign the England international this summer. Eddie Howe has gone on record to make his feelings crystal clear, with Gordon currently on an extended break after his endeavours with England at Euro 2024.

Despite coming through the ranks at Everton, the 23-year-old reportedly had his head turned by interest from the Reds last month, with Newcastle scrambling to get their finances in order ahead of the Premier League PSR deadline. Although the Magpies are in a much better financial position compared to last month, recent reports from the Liverpool Echo suggest the saga is far from over.

Steven Gerrard his football hero
Earlier this year, like many kids growing up on the streets of Liverpool, Gordon cited club legend Steven Gerrard as his football hero growing up while also selecting the icon in his ultimate England five-a-side team.

Speaking on The Overlap, he said: "Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up. Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool, and he was an unbelievable player."

'Top' Anfield review
Gordon listed St. James' Park as the best atmosphere in the Premier League but ranked Liverpool in second place behind his current home. The boyhood Liverpool fan cited his roots to Merseyside as the main reason behind that decision - snubbing former club Everton.

"Other than St James' Park, it's Anfield by far,” he told Channel 4. "I think because I'm from the city, I grew up watching it. Before the game when they sing You'll Never Walk Alone, it's top level."

Mo Salah comment
In an interview released earlier this month, Gordon set tongues wagging once again with a further Liverpool mention. He emphasised his Reds affection by picking Salah as the best player he has ever played against.

"I would say directly against, I would say Hakimi for PSG," he told Fubo. "He was definitely the best right-back. But on the pitch, I would probably say Mo Salah."
