The Spanish international has become a prime target for Arne Slot as he aims to bolster his squad ahead of the new season. Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes is currently in talks with the La Liga side regarding the specifics of the deal.
Zubimendi does have a £51 million ($64.9 million) release clause in his contract, but it's been suggested that this clause can only be triggered if the payment is made in full. Paying such a significant amount of money up front could have an impact on Liverpool's Financial Fair Play (FFP) situation. Contrary to some reports, the ECHO understands that Liverpool is not planning to include any players as part of the final agreement.
If a deal cannot be reached, Liverpool will have to consider other options. With this in mind, we've taken a look at potential alternatives, three out of four of which could provide a financial boost for the Anfield club.
Joris Chotard
Despite being only 22, Chotard has already made 151 appearances in Ligue 1. He currently plays for Montpellier and has two years left on his contract. Primarily a defensive midfielder, Chotard can also play in a more advanced central midfield role.
Last year, he made 32 appearances across all competitions and represented France in the Olympic games, helping them reach the gold medal match where the host nation was defeated by Spain after extra time.
Rumors have been swirling this summer that Rennes is in discussions for a potential transfer of the midfielder. Transfermarkt values him at approximately €10 million ($10.9 million), making him a potentially cost-effective option for Liverpool.
Javi Guerra
Guerra, another young talent, has become a staple for his club. Last season saw him take to the pitch 40 times across all competitions for Valencia, primarily as a central midfielder, netting four goals and providing one assist.
The 21 year old still has three years left on his Valencia contract and has been strongly linked with a £21.4 million ($27.3 million) move to Atletico Madrid this summer. However, it's believed Valencia has called off the deal after Atletico missed a deadline. This could pave the way for Liverpool to swoop in.
Morten Frendrup
Liverpool's interest in the 23-year-old has been piqued this summer, following an impressive Serie A season with Genoa. Reports suggest the Reds have even tabled a bid worth €25 million ($27.3 million)
Frendrup is considered a crucial part of Genoa's squad, so persuading the Italians to sell might not be straightforward. He made 39 appearances in all competitions last season, demonstrating his adaptability by playing in defensive midfield, central midfield and occasionally on the flanks, scoring twice and providing six assists. The Danish international still has four years left on his current contract, putting Genoa in a strong position for negotiations.
Joao Gomes
If Liverpool is looking for a player with Premier League experience, they might want to consider Wolves' Joao Gomes. He was a standout performer for Gary O'Neil's team last season, particularly in the defensive midfield role.
However, Liverpool could face a hurdle if it decides to pursue the Brazilian. After selling Pedro Neto, who is on the verge of a £65 million ($82.8 million) move to Chelsea, Wolves may not be keen to let go of another key player and would likely demand a hefty fee. Manchester United is also believed to be interested.
