'Already informed': Fabrizio Romano shares late night Mikel Merino update after latest Arsenal talks

Arsenal still have weeks remaining in this summer’s transfer business to add to their sole signing of Riccardo Calafiori.

However, it is now just one week until they begin their 2024/25 campaign with their home clash against Wolves.

Mikel Arteta will have come into the window knowing it was never going to be a case of Arsenal signing a load of new faces.

Instead, the Gunners have been focused on adding the right players to their squad which has been seen through the quality signing of Calafiori.

With just a matter of one win separating Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the table last season, fine margins are proving an important role in deciding where the title goes.

And this has seen the Gunners target some top quality players as Arsenal now prepare their bid for Mikel Merino.

Fabrizio Romano issues Mikel Merino update from Arsenal
The Gunners now have just one final friendly standing in their way of their season opener against Lyon.

On Wednesday, Arsenal faced the Bundesliga champions in Bayer Leverkusen and it could not have gone much better for Arteta’s side.

Despite not having their only summer signing, Calafiori, on display the Gunners ran riot with a 4-1 victory over the German side which went unbeaten in the league last term.

Optimism has to be high around north London going into the new campaign and that would certainly be added to if they are able to sign Merino.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Merino has no informed the likes of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona that his wish is to join Arsenal this summer.

The Gunners are still in active talks with Real Sociedad to try and get a deal over the line with a few weeks remaining in the window.

Personal terms are not an issue for Merino with the Spain international having already agreed to what has been offered by the Gunners.

But the two clubs are going to keep working on the payment structure of a potential deal with the fee expected to be in excess of €25m (£21m).

Mikel Merino only wants to join Arsenal
As far as the player is concerned, a move to Arsenal appears to be the only option which he is considering this summer.

And when it comes to the finances, personal terms are already agreed and the fee is not huge so Arsenal will have no issue in matching the demands.

With Merino’s midfield partner now potentially on the move, Arsenal will be hoping they can get their deal for Merino done fast.

Selling Zubimendi could suddenly see the Spanish outfit land a considerable sum of money which may come as a surprise this summer.
