Arsenal get big boost in signing 'world-class' £56m star after Monday night update - View

Arsenal have been handed a boost in signing their priority midfield target this summer.

The Gunners are aiming to sign a new midfielder in the current transfer window and they have already agreed personal terms with Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino.

The club were recently ‘afraid‘ that Liverpool’s pursuit of Martin Zubimendi could scupper their plans as Sociedad may not want to lose both of their leading midfielders.

However, Arsenal no longer need to worry about the same with Zubimendi turning down Liverpool last night to continue with Sociedad. He is set to sign a new contract.

Mikel Arteta’s side are now in pole position to secure the signature of Merino, who was described as ‘world-class‘ by Kieran Tierney during his loan stint at Sociedad.

Arsenal need to sign Merino as soon as possible
Merino has already given the green light for a transfer to the Gunners. He has informed Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay that he wants to go to Arsenal.

The onus is on the Gunners to secure an agreement with the La Liga outfit.

The Spain international has a £56 million release clause in his contract at Sociedad, but he could be signed for around £21m with his deal expiring next summer.

Zubimendi’s decision to continue with Sociedad looks likely to pave the way for Merino’s exit, but Arsenal can’t take things for granted and need to sign him quickly.

Sociedad have tried to negotiate fresh terms with him and could make a fresh attempt to convince him to stay. Arsenal need to be proactive to secure his services.
