Arsenal suffer £21m transfer blow as Mikel Merino alternative travels for medical

Youssouf Fofana is expected to complete a proposed move to AC Milan, despite mooted interest from Arsenal in their ongoing search for a new midfielder. Real Sociedad player Mikel Merino is thought to be the prime option for Edu Gaspar and key figures behind the scenes at the Emirates Stadium.

Having rubber-stamped transfers for David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori this summer, football.london understands Arsenal will prioritise strengthening their engine room between now and when the August 30 deadline passes. The smart money is on a swoop for Euro 2024 winner Merino.

However, there were lingering suggestions Fofana could pitch up in the Premier League, with Manchester United and Arsenal both heavily linked with interest in his signature. It looks as though the Frenchman is preparing to seal a proposed move to the San Siro, though, after Milan agreed a £21million fee with Monaco.

That's according to reports from Fabrizio Romano via social media. Fofana is expected to undergo a medical in the next 24 hours before putting pen-to-paper on the necessary formalities.

Fofana, who can operate as a defensive midfielder and box-to-box player, scored four goals and provided as many assist for Monaco in Ligue 1 last season. He made 35 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The 25-year-old has been capped 21 times by the France national team. He had 12 months to run on his contract at Monaco - who he joined from Strasbourg in January 2020 - with Fofana poised to sign a four-year deal for Milan to end speculation linking him with Arsenal and United.
