Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres drops major update on his future with transfer hint

Viktor Gyokeres has put Arsenal and Chelsea on notice by suggesting that he could still leave Sporting Lisbon in the summer transfer window.
Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a big-money transfer this summer after plundering 43 goals in 50 games for Sporting last season. He has picked up where he left off, starting the 2024/25 campaign with six goals and three assists in the opening four matches for Sporting.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea are still interested in adding a world-class striker to their ranks before the window closes on August 30, with Gyokeres and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen the best options on the market. They will therefore have noted the latest quotes from Gyokeres, who spoke openly after scoring a hat-trick in Sporting’s 5-0 win over Farense on Friday.

"We never know what’s going to happen,” Gyokeres told Sport TV. “It doesn’t just depend on me. We’ll see, but I feel good here. I don’t feel any stress about doing anything else. In football, in the transfer window, it’s normal, there are things we don’t know, that happen quickly. But I love being here, there’s no stress."

Gyokeres is considered a more likely target for Arsenal, who still have funds available to strengthen their squad as Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino nears his arrival. Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League game against Aston Villa, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that the club are always looking for ways to improve their squad.

“We have to because anything can happen both ways,” he said. “You have to be ready and especially in the last week. You have to be alert and prepared because a lot of surprises can come, for many different reasons and we are prepared.”

But asked specifically about his options up front, he added: “We have some great strikers. Gabi (Gabriel) Jesus is there, Kai [Havertz] has played there a lot of minutes, Leo (Leandro Trossard) has played there and we believe we have all the necessities as well. We fully trust our players. We want to get better for sure and we will try but we are going to try with the players that are already with us.”

Chelsea are still chasing a striker after their deal for Samu Omorodion fell through, although Osimhen appears the more likely target. Enzo Maresca has made it clear he wants more fire power, saying: “If we have a chance to bring in a No.9 who can help us, we are going to try.”

He added: “If we sign for the sake of signing, it’s better that we don’t sign any more because we don’t need to sign players just for the sake of it. But if we are going to sign players because they can help us improve, sure we will sign players – otherwise we are happy with the way we are.”
