The Gunners have narrowly missed out on the Premier League title for the past two seasons, but continue to invest in their playing group. So far this summer Italian Riccardo Calafiori has been their only major arrival but they continue to pursue Euro 2024 winner Mikel Merino.
Real Sociedad are playing hardball when it comes to their midfielder, who would be a slightly left-field signing given Arsenal's desire to sign young talent. The Gunners are looking to further add to the depth of their squad with injuries to key players cited as a concern.
Here's the latest from north London.
Nketiah exit closed off
If Eddie Nketiah is to leave Arsenal this summer it looks unlikely that Marseille will be his destination. The French club had been persistent in their attempts to sign the striker, who is by no means a regular at the Emirates.
Marseille though have decided against matching the Gunners’ €30m asking price they were quoted for Nketiah. RMC Sport reports that the Ligue 1 giants have instead turned their attention elsewhere and have now agreed a deal to sign Elye Wahi from rivals Lens.
They will reportedly pay €25m plus bonuses for the French Under-21 international, who featured against Arsenal in the Champions League last season.
Eddie Nketiah may seek a move elsewhere to play regularly
Gunners defender to join Genoa
Arsenal defender Brooke Norton-Cuffy is heading to Genoa as part of a deal worth around £3.5million, according to the Evening Standard. The 20-year-old came through the Gunners’ academy but has struggled to break into the first team and spent the last two seasons out on loan.
Norton-Cuffy was at Millwall last season after previously having spells at Lincoln, Rotherham and Coventry. The right-back has now chosen to pursue his ambitions of playing regularly in Italy and will undergo a medical before joining Genoa.
It has become a growing trend for British players to head overseas in order to further their careers. Brentford's Aaron Hickey, who was once on Arsenal's radar, moved to Italy with Bologna several years ago before his stock rose and he convinced English clubs to come knocking.
Nico Williams has a host of Europe's top clubs eyeing him
Williams set to remain at Bilbao
Nico Williams was one of the brightest lights in Spain's Euro 2024 winning side, scoring against England in the final. Those exploits saw a host of major teams circle, Arsenal among them. It looks increasingly like he'll remain at Athletic Bilbao however.
Barcelona too have been pursuing a deal for Williams, but they've agreed a move for Dani Olmo and their budget may no longer stretch to sign both players. Now Williams has been handed the No10 shirt by Bilbao - making the 22-year-old central to their plans at San Mames.
