'Becoming clearer': £43m player is getting closer to leaving and Liverpool are still interested - journalist

The clock is beginning to tick for Liverpool in this summer’s transfer window.

More than two months after the end of the Premier League season, the Reds are still yet to dip their toes into the market at all.

However, that all looks set to change in the coming weeks. Journalist James Pearce has declared that Liverpool will definitely make signings between now and August the 30th.

Part of the reason that declaration will be so exciting for Liverpool supporters, is that it is a little unclear as to which players – and even which positions – the Reds are looking at strengthening.

But although they’ve done incredibly well to keep things under wraps, certain names are definitely worth keeping on the radar for fans.

Johan Bakayoko close to transfer
Throughout the summer, Liverpool have been linked with a big number of players. That is not unusual for a club the size of the Reds.

Agents will often throw their name to the media in an effort to ramp up interest in a client.

Some of these – like links to Adrien Rabiot – are rumours that many Liverpool fans will dismiss instantly. Others grow in credibility over time.

One that probably falls into the latter category is Liverpool’s pursuit of Johan Bakayoko. The PSV Eindhoven winger supposedly has big fans at Anfield.

After a top season with PSV, it had been expected that Bakayoko would move on this summer, but with less than a month to go in the window, that is yet to happen.

But according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, it still remains more than likely that the 21-year-old will find a new club this summer. And it could yet be Liverpool.

“Johan Bakayoko’s still a name watched & discussed internally with attention at RB Leipzig,” Tavolieri says on X. “Only question remains what type of profile to bring if Dani Olmo’s leaving and it hasn’t yet been definitively settled internally.

“PL market ready to work on a deal this month of August with Bakayoko’s still on LFC shortlist,” he adds. “Bakayoko’s future is gradually becoming clearer.”

Johan Bakayoko one to watch for Liverpool
Given that Liverpool were in discussions to sign Anthony Gordon in June, it seems fair to say that they are in the market for a forward.

Although Gordon would be a popular signing, it’s arguable that Bakayoko would actually make a lot more sense as a signing for the Reds.

As a left-footed forward, the Belgium international would be much more of a rarity in the Liverpool squad and would be a better natural successor to Mohamed Salah.

Bakayoko is available for around £43m, too. That’s over £30m less than what Newcastle were asking for Gordon.

Consequently, we think that Bakayoko is certainly one to watch for Liverpool fans over the coming weeks. Keep your eyes on this one, Reds.
