Brentford agree £27.5m deal for Liverpool’s Carvalho

Brentford have agreed a deal with Liverpool for the transfer of attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho, who is set to join the London club in a deal worth up to £27.5 million.

Carvalho joined Liverpool from Fulham in 2022 for a fee of £5 million but has never been able to nail down a regular place in the team.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig in Germany and then Hull City in the Championship. At Hull, he scored nine goals in 20 league games and was named the EFL young player of the month in April.

Liverpool have included a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause in the deal, while Fulham will receive 20 per cent of the profit from his move to Brentford. The west London club will pay £22.5 million with a further £5 million in add-ons.

If a deal can be finalised, Carvalho will become Brentford’s second senior signing of the summer after Brazilian striker Igor Thiago, who joined for a club-record fee of around £30 million from Club Bruges.

Thiago’s Brentford career has not begun as planned, though. In a pre-season friendly last month, he suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery and is expected to rule him out of action until the end of the year.

Carvalho is a product of the Fulham academy and was a breakthrough star in the 2021/22 season, when he scored 10 goals in 36 Championship matches.

He has represented both England and Portugal at youth level and can play on the wing or as an advanced midfield player.

Brentford have been looking to add to their midfield options this summer and were close to signing Archie Gray from Leeds United before the move was hijacked by Tottenham Hotspur.

It remains to be seen, meanwhile, whether Brentford receive any offers for key striker Ivan Toney, who has one year remaining on his contract at the club. So far there have been no serious proposals for the 28-year-old, who was part of England’s squad at Euro 2024 in Germany.
