The Reds are yet to make a senior signing ahead of Arne Slot’s first season in charge of the club, which begins at newly-promoted Ipswich on Saturday.
Liverpool reportedly held talks with Newcastle over a shock move to sign Gordon back in June, with the Magpies needing to raise funds ahead of the Premier League’s PSR deadline at the end of that particular month.
Gordon, who proved a revelation at St James’ Park last season, was reportedly open to joining Liverpool but the clubs could not ultimately agree a deal. Newcastle instead sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton respectively.
While Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is confident of keeping the 23-year-old, Carragher believes the former Everton winger could make a “frightening” impact at Anfield.
“That was a transfer that I would like to have seen go through,” he told Blood Red: Liverpool FC.

‘I think the reason why Anthony Gordon’s name has probably come up and why Liverpool are interested is that I think there’s only [Darwin] Nunez in the attack now who has blistering pace.
“[Mohamed] Salah’s obviously not as quick as he was, of course he’s not, and I don’t think Diaz has got that pace. I go back to [Sadio] Mane.
“I think Anthony Gordon’s pace is frightening, I do. You know when you’re watching a game on TV and you go, “Wow!”, and you just see someone leave a full-back.
“That’s what I think he could add if that was the case, if he was to come in and maybe Liverpool were interested.
“I think it’s that pace, Mane’s pace basically. I do think we lack that in the attack.”
