Euro giants in talks to re-sign 'sensational' Arsenal star - report

Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira will return to his former club, FC Porto, on loan for the season, according to The Athletic.
The Portuguese giants have agreed a deal to bring the 24-year-old back to the Primeira Liga after just two seasons at the Emirates Stadium.

Vieira joined Arsenal from Porto in July 2022 for around €40 million (£34.26 million). However, he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Mikel Arteta, making just 22 Premier League appearances in his debut season.

Last season, Vieira’s minutes were limited, with Kai Havertz and Declan Rice favoured in midfield despite the manager hailing him as sensational just months ago.

The Portuguese youth international was not in Arsenal’s matchday squad for their opening-day victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. He will also miss their upcoming fixture against Aston Villa as Porto finalise the loan move.

With the arrival of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad and the emergence of Ethan Nwaneri, Vieira will find himself further down the pecking order.

A temporary return to Porto will allow him to get consistent playing time and rediscover his best form.

Vieira made 76 appearances for Porto during his previous stint at the club, scoring ten goals and providing 18 assists. He has represented Portugal at youth level but is yet to earn a senior cap.

Arsenal have been relatively quiet in the transfer market this summer, with the permanent signing of David Raya and the addition of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna being their only notable moves.

They remain interested in signing a new centre-forward, but primary target Benjamin Sesko signed a new deal, and the club has not settled on a new choice.

On the other hand, Jakub Kiwior and Eddie Nketiah could be on their way out of Arsenal before the transfer window closes.

Kiwior has attracted interest from multiple clubs in Serie A and will likely return to Italy. Nottingham Forest are in talks to sign Nketiah.
