Fabrizio Romano issues Mikel Merino transfer update after developments in London on Wednesday night

Arsenal are now left with just over one week to complete any final pieces of business before the summer transfer window shuts.
Mikel Arteta‘s side got off to the perfect start in the Premier League one the weekend but the Gunners have not exactly been flying in the transfer market.

Edu Gaspar has been able to provide Arsenal with one signing which has seen Riccardo Calafiori make the move to north London.

However, the search for signing number two has really seen the north London side struggle in the market.

Mikel Merino is the man who Arsenal are hoping to bring in but it is a deal which has not proven to be as straightforward as many would have expected considering he is in the final year of his deal.

But the talks continue to take place in the background with Arsenal now up and running in their 2024/25 efforts.

With the clock ticking down on the Gunners, Fabrizio Romano has shared an update after talks were held on Wednesday in London.

The two clubs have been locked in fresh talks over recent hours and it seems as if there have been positive conversations helf.

Romano has now claimed Merino is on the verge of becoming an Arsenal player on the back of these latest talks held in the capital.

Just the final details are now in between the Spain international and his proposed move to the Emirates.

Merino has made his decision on where he wants to play his football which may well prove a big factor in Sociedad accepting their fate in these negotiations.

Mikel Merino negotiations may harm Arsenal’s hopes of signing a striker
Considering Merino is set to become a free agent next summer, Sociedad have negotiated really hard in these talks.

The Spanish side are set to lose the midfielder on a free next summer yet they are pushing Arsenal for every cent they can get out of the Premier League side.

Given Arsenal’s approach this summer has been focusing on one target at a time, it has to be questioned how these prolonged talks may have harmed their hopes of landing a new striker.

Arsenal are believed to be interested in Victor Osimhen but their extensive talks with Sociedad for Merino could well make a late deal for a big name striker extremely hard to pull off with such little time now remaining.
