'I can't believe': TalkSPORT pundit stunned by Liverpool transfer story he's heard

Liverpool haven’t had much luck on the transfer front this summer and, with just over two weeks to go, they haven’t got much time left.

The Reds are the only Premier League club yet to make a signing in the current transfer window.

Liverpool didn’t rush into the market initially, as Arne Slot opted to assess his squad fully after taking the reins at Anfield.

Then, earlier this month, the Reds began moving in the market, as they looked to bring a new No. 6 to the red half of the city.

However, things didn’t exactly go to plan with their prime target, and talkSPORT’s Jason Cundy admits he’s baffled by what has happened.

Jason Cundy cannot believe Martin Zubimendi has snubbed Liverpool
Liverpool sought to bring Martin Zubimendi to Anfield from Real Sociedad, and talks seemed to be on the right track.

As per Sky Sports News, the Reds were under the impression that the Spain international wanted to leave Sociedad.

However, Zubimendi ultimately opted to snub Liverpool and remain with the Basque club after being offered a new contract with higher wages.

Cundy, speaking on talkSPORT (12/8/2024, 11:25pm), said: “It’s a tough one. I can’t work it out myself, to be honest with you. There’s something we don’t know.

“I can’t believe that a player that has been offered a chance to go to Liverpool is going to turn it down without there being something we don’t know. I just can’t see it.”

Why Zubimendi may have turned Liverpool down
As Sky Sports journalist Danyal Khan suggested, Zubimendi may have turned a move down because of the strain put on the Sociedad squad by the transfer window this summer.

The Liga club has lost Robin Le Normand to Atletico Madrid, while Mikel Merino has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.

If Sociedad were to lose all three players in one summer, it would leave them severely weakened for the season ahead.

And with Zubimendi being Sociedad through and through, he may well have decided not to abandon them at this moment in time.

“In Spain, it’s very important that the player has to initiate that buyout clause for a club to then open talks and make that move happen,” wrote Khan.

“But it didn’t even get to that stage because Zubimendi changed his mind.”
