Some of Arsenal’s deals were completed after the 11pm deadline on Friday as they submitted deal sheets in time, which gave them two more hours to get the signings over the line.
Brazil goalkeeper Neto and England winger Raheem Sterling joined the Gunners on loan from Bournemouth and Chelsea respectively.
Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsdale has joined Southampton permanently, Eddie Nketiah is now on Crystal Palace’s books, and Reiss Nelson has linked up with Fulham on loan.
Obviously the standout deal for Arsenal was the one that saw Sterling, one of the Premier League’s most exciting players in recent years, arrive from Chelsea on loan.
However, Sterling’s move appears to have split opinion among fans and pundits alike, with ESPN’s Shaka Hislop not pulling any punches with his verdict on the deal.
Shaka Hislop baffled by Arsenal signing Raheem Sterling
Hislop, speaking on ESPN on Friday night, admitted he really doesn’t get the move, accusing Sterling of having “done nothing in the last two years” that suggests he can do a job at Arsenal.
“I have to say I don’t get this, I really don’t,” said Hislop.
“I understand Arsenal want bodies, want pedigree and they find that in Raheem Sterling, but Sterling has done nothing in the last two years that suggests he makes Arsenal any better even as a squad player.
“And so if we are here talking about a £20million package or £150,000 a week for a player who is there to cover Saka, to give him a rest, to maybe add some experience to a dressing room, I find that a lot of money to pay for a player who doesn’t make you better. I just don’t see, I don’t see the value in this.”
Why Sterling to Arsenal makes sense
With Reiss Nelson leaving Arsenal on loan, it frees up a slot in their squad which Sterling is set to fill.
The 82-cap England international can play on the left flank, offer competition and cover for Bukayo Saka on the right and even play up front if needed.
In addition, Arteta worked with Sterling at Manchester City, so the Arsenal manager knows what he’s getting from the Chelsea loanee.
All in all, it’s a deal which makes perfect sense and should take the Gunners up a level
