'I know': Liverpool told one of their players now wants to leave and re-join his former club

Liverpool look likely to be busy during the final two weeks of the transfer window.

So used to seeing their club get business done early in summers gone by, supporters are beginning to grow a little concerned by goings on at Anfield.

The Reds seemingly had a plan to let Arne Slot take a good look at his first-team squad before deciding on any new additions.

However, with just two weeks of the market left to go, Liverpool are yet to make any signing at all and there are still a number of players who could do with being moved on.

There is still time to get things sorted for the Reds, though, and they don’t appear to be short of takers for one or two players who are at risk of being sold.

Mainz angling for Sepp van den Berg
From the outside looking in, it really feels like Liverpool have shot themselves in the foot this summer.

You can understand the reasons for wanting Slot to look at the group he inherited before making concrete decisions, but that perhaps went on a lot longer than it needed to.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
It has been claimed that Liverpool will try and sign a defensive midfielder but plenty of other noise also points to the opposite being true.

Aside from any glaring holes in the squad that need to be addressed, the Reds have also left it very late in terms of selling a few, too.

It isn’t as though Liverpool haven’t had chances to boost their finances. Sepp van den Berg is one who has had lots of interest, with Liverpool turning down numerous bids for the Dutchman.

But with the pressure ramping up on the Reds to sort the 22-year-old’s future out, Mainz director Christian Heidel has publicly claimed that Van den Berg wants to re-join the Bundesliga club.

“We are a bit dependent on FC Liverpool,” Heidel says via journalist Florian Plettenberg. “I know that he would very much like to return to Mainz. Perhaps the player’s voice will play a role in Liverpool’s decision.

“Of course, it is Liverpool’s legitimate right to put a price tag on the player. But then there has to be a club willing to pay that price, and the player has to want to go there,” he adds. “As of today, that’s not the case, which is why we still have a chance.

“If Liverpool loans him out for another year, then we are the perfect club. Sepp would confirm that as well. We are waiting a bit longer and preparing ourselves in case it doesn’t work out.”

No chance for Mainz and Sepp van den Berg
All summer long it has felt as though Mainz have been trying to lowball Liverpool into selling them – or loaning – Van den Berg.

The truth is that Liverpool have put a clear value of around £20m on the centre-back. Mainz can’t afford that, and that puts them out of the running. End of discussion.

Clearly, Van den Berg did well at Mainz last year and had a good time with Jurgen Klopp’s former club.

But that is no reason for Liverpool to lose out on a good fee for a player who has plenty of potential. With respect, they can either pay up or leave the conversation.

Time is running out for the Reds to get want they want for Van den Berg. Slot rates the Netherlands U21 international, though, so if he has to stay put then so be it.
