'I'd be breaking the bank': Paul Merson names player Arsenal must sign to win the Premier League

Arsenal will aim to build on successive second-place finishes in the Premier League by going all the way in the 2024-25 campaign.
Mikel Arteta boasts a strong squad with a mix of youth and experience but Manchester City will be hard to dethrone at the top as they look to make it five league titles on the bounce.

Arsenal have bolstered their squad with the addition of Riccardo Calafiori and are believed to be in the market for further reinforcements before the transfer deadline.

Now, Paul Merson believes the Gunners are sure to win the Premier League title if they get their hands on Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

Paul Merson urges Arsenal to splash the cash for Alexander Isak
Merson lauded Newcastle for keeping hold of Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, both of whom have been linked with transfers this summer.

However, the 56-year-old believes Isak’s addition would go a long way in helping Chelsea or Arsenal to reach their respective goals this season.

“Newcastle have done well to keep Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, at the moment,” Merson wrote in his column for Sky Sports.

“If I was a Chelsea or an Arsenal, I’d be breaking the bank for Isak. If Chelsea got Isak, they’d be a certainty for a top-four finish. If Arsenal got him, they’d win the league.”

What Alexander Isak would bring to Arsenal
Arsenal already have Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz for the centre-forward position, but Isak would bring guaranteed goals that could help close the gap to Manchester City at the top.

The 24-year-old scored 21 Premier League goals for Newcastle last season, which is more than the combined tallies of Jesus (four) and Havertz (13).

Isak’s potential arrival could also help Arteta use Havertz in midfield, with the Gunners yet to reinforce that area of the pitch.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Mikel Merino but have thus far been unable to agree a deal despite being locked in talks with Real Sociedad for three weeks.

What does the future hold for Alexander Isak?
Arsenal hold an interest in Isak but would likely have to shell out a massive fee to convince Newcastle United to sell him at this stage of the transfer window.

The Swedish striker has emerged as one of the best players in his position in the Premier League since moving to St. James’ Park in the summer of 2022 and has scored 35 goals across 67 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Isak is valued at a whopping £177m by Newcastle and is tied down at the club until 2028, making the deal virtually impossible to pull off unless potential suitors work out a compromise with the Magpies.
