Leon Goretzka's Liverpool transfer 'stance' as Bayern Munich make huge decision

Liverpool have seen their hopes of adding to their midfield ranks dashed so far this summer. The Reds kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory against Ipswich Town at Portman Road courtesy of goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

The lack of business completed this summer looked to be a real problem in the first half with no shots on target for Liverpool and Ipswich dominating. The introduction of Ibrahima Konate for Jarell Quansah at half time saw the visitors gain control though and two goals in five minutes was enough to secure the three points.

On the pitch, including in pre-season, Liverpool have been very impressive but that has not been reflected in the transfer market. Arne Slot is yet to have any new arrivals at Anfield despite strong links to Anthony Gordon, Marc Guehi and most recently Martin Zubimendi.

Interest from Liverpool in Zubimendi was concrete, though the Spain international has again opted to remain at Real Sociedad. In recent trading periods he has also rejected moves to Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

One player who has been linked to Liverpool as an alternative to Zubimendi is Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka, who could be available in a cut-price deal. The Germany international has been placed up for sale by Bayern with the club keen to drum up interest for the midfielder in before his contract expires in 2026.

Speaking about the player's future following his omission from his side's squad against Ulm at the weekend, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said: "Leon has been at Bayern for a very, very long time. He was very successful and is a great player. We spoke to him and made it clear to him that there’s a lot of competition in his position. We are very well equipped there. Leon knows that. And that’s why the situation is like this at the moment, and why he’s not in the squad today.

"Not at the moment [there haven't been any offers]. But of course there are some interested parties for Leon Goretzka because he’s simply a very, very good player."

It has been reported that the 29-year-old is keen to remain at Allianz Arena and fight for his place, though the idea of a move to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Liverpool is said to be 'intriguing' to Goretzka, as per Sky Sports Germany.

A departure for the England international could see Liverpool push to sign a new defender with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi reportedly one potential option.
