Liverpool close in on making Euro 2024 hero Arne Slot's first signing - but there's a catch

Liverpool are hoping to sign goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili - who could one day take over from Alisson in goal.

But if the Reds do land the shot stopper from Valencia then he will be either loaned back to the Spanish club or sent elsewhere to continue his development. Brazilian Alisson will be Arne Slot ’s No 1 for this season.

But the Merseysiders have a long-standing interest in the 23-year-old Georgia international, and are exploring the possibility of a £30m deal. Liverpool could leave him with Valencia for this season or bring him to Merseyside now and then loan him out to another club.

While Mamardashvili is seen as a bright star, Alisson remains one of the world's best keepers. But his potential successor did shine at Euro 2024, playing in all four of Georgia's games as they reached the Last 16.

That came after a season in which he made 37 La Liga appearances for Valencia as they finished ninth. It was his performances at the Euros that really caught the eye though, including keeping a clean sheet against a Portugal side containing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Their 2-0 win in that final group game set up a Last 16 clash against Spain, in which they lost 4-1 to the eventual tournament winners. But Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou saw enough to be seriously impressed.

He told ITV after the Portugal win: “They have an outstanding goalkeeper in Mamardashvili. He is one that everyone is tracking. He has had a strong season at Valencia and when you have a strong goalkeeper, who is in form, it keeps you in games.”

Giorgi Mamardashvili has become a top target for the Reds
Slot is yet to make a signing this summer, likely leading to confusion over making Mamardashvili a priority target. But the Dutchman has insisted that he has inherited a very strong squad.

"I think as a club like we are, we are always looking if we can strengthen the squad. But it’s not so easy to strengthen the squad if you see both games today. I’ve said many times before that I’ve inherited a really strong team," he said after the win over Sevilla.

"If we can and if we think it’s possible, we will strengthen the squad. But only if we think we can and if it’s possible. Not only an important week, an important year to come. We have to improve day by day.

Arne Slot is closing in on his first signing as Liverpool
"I think we saw today in both games a lot of good things but I can make a big list also of things we have to improve, which is completely normal. Some of them with the certain new ideas we have, have only been [working] with this for a week.

"They have to adjust to that, they have to adjust to each other maybe with these some new ideas. So it’s normal that we are far from perfect, but even being far from perfect we can score four, so that’s a good start."
